Problems we treat
- Irregular periods, or no periods for months
- Heavy bleeding, clots, or periods lasting more than a week
- Painful periods that stop you from working or studying
- Bleeding between periods or after intercourse
- Bleeding after menopause
Common causes
Hormone changes, PCOS, thyroid problems, fibroids, polyps, endometriosis, stress and weight changes. Some contraceptives also change your periods.
How we find out
Dr. Maryam will ask about your cycle and symptoms, examine you if needed, and may arrange an ultrasound and blood tests (for example blood count, thyroid and hormones). It helps to note the dates of your last few periods before your visit.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause and whether you want to become pregnant. It can include medicines to control bleeding and pain, hormone treatment, iron for anaemia, or treatment of the underlying cause.
Call or come in straight away if you have:
- Very heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting
- Any bleeding after menopause
- Severe sudden pain in the lower tummy
If you can't reach us, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Common questions
Is it normal for periods to be irregular?+
Some variation is normal, especially in the first years after periods start and before menopause. Cycles that are often shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days are worth checking.
Will I need an internal examination?+
Not always. Dr. Maryam will explain what is needed and why, and you can ask any questions first.
