Help when you are trying to conceive

Not getting pregnant can be stressful, and you are not alone. A step-by-step assessment of both partners usually finds the cause, and many couples conceive with simple treatment.

When to see a doctor

  • After 12 months of trying, if you are under 35
  • After 6 months of trying, if you are 35 or older
  • Sooner if your periods are irregular or absent, or you have had pelvic infections, endometriosis or previous surgery

The assessment

  • A detailed history and examination
  • Blood tests to check hormones and ovulation
  • An ultrasound of the womb and ovaries
  • A test of the fallopian tubes when needed
  • A semen analysis for the husband, because male factors are involved in around a third of cases

Treatment

Depending on the cause, treatment may include advice on timing and lifestyle, medicines to help ovulation, treatment of PCOS, thyroid or infections, or surgery. If you need IVF or other advanced treatment, Dr. Maryam will refer you to a specialist centre.

Common questions
