Signs of PCOS
- Irregular or missed periods
- Extra hair on the face, chest or tummy
- Acne or oily skin
- Weight gain, especially around the tummy
- Thinning hair on the head
- Difficulty getting pregnant
How it is diagnosed
PCOS is diagnosed from your symptoms, blood tests for hormones, and sometimes an ultrasound of the ovaries. Other causes, such as thyroid problems, are ruled out at the same time.
How it is managed
- Lifestyle: even a small weight loss of 5 to 10% can bring periods back.
- Medicines to regulate periods and protect the lining of the womb.
- Treatment for acne and unwanted hair.
- Checks for blood sugar and cholesterol, because PCOS raises the risk of diabetes.
- Ovulation treatment when you are trying to conceive.
Common questions
Can I get pregnant with PCOS?+
Yes. Many women with PCOS conceive naturally, and others need treatment to help them ovulate. Dr. Maryam will plan this with you.
Do cysts on the ovaries mean I have PCOS?+
Not necessarily. The "cysts" in PCOS are small follicles, and many women have them without PCOS. Diagnosis depends on symptoms and blood tests too.
