Normal delivery
For most healthy pregnancies a normal (vaginal) delivery is the safest choice, with a quicker recovery. Regular check-ups, staying active, healthy weight gain and good control of blood pressure and sugar all help.
Normal delivery after a C-section (VBAC)
Many women who have had one C-section can safely try for a normal delivery next time. Whether it is right for you depends on:
- Why the earlier C-section was done
- The type of cut on the womb
- How long ago it was
- How this pregnancy is progressing, and the baby's size and position
When a C-section is advised
A planned C-section may be recommended, for example, when the baby is lying in the wrong position, the placenta is low, there are twins in certain positions, or there have been two or more previous C-sections. Sometimes a C-section is needed during labour if it is not progressing safely.
