Women's health

Prolapse and bladder problems

After childbirth and menopause, the muscles that support the womb and bladder can weaken. Many women live with heaviness or leaking urine for years without asking for help, but these problems are common and treatable.

Signs of prolapse

  • A feeling of heaviness or something coming down in the vagina
  • A bulge you can feel or see
  • Difficulty passing urine or stool
  • Lower back ache that eases when you lie down

Urine leakage

Leaking when you cough, sneeze or lift (stress incontinence), or a sudden urge to go that you cannot hold (urge incontinence), are both common and can be improved.

Treatment

  • Pelvic floor exercises, taught at the clinic
  • Treating constipation and chronic cough, and weight loss if needed
  • A pessary (a soft support placed in the vagina)
  • Surgery for more severe prolapse

Common questions

Is prolapse dangerous?+

It is rarely dangerous, but it can affect your comfort and daily life. Treatment depends on how severe it is and how much it bothers you.
