Methods
The method is chosen after examining your child, depending on age and anatomy.
- Ring method (Plastibell): a small plastic ring is placed and falls off by itself in about 5 to 10 days. It is often preferred for newborns and young babies.
- Traditional method: the foreskin is removed and the wound is stitched or left to heal.
What to expect
- A consultation and examination first.
- Local anaesthetic to numb the area.
- The procedure itself usually takes a short time.
- You go home the same day with written aftercare instructions.
Aftercare
Keep the area clean and dry, give pain relief as advised, and use loose nappies or clothing. Come back for review if you are worried.
Call or come in straight away if you have:
- Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure
- Your child cannot pass urine
- Fever, spreading redness or pus
- The ring has not come off after two weeks
If you can't reach us, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
